The safest way to get rid of stubborn ear wax is to see a professional. At Medineeds our experienced specialist ear care team offer Ear (Aural) microsuction and after care advice.

What is Aural Microsuction? Microsuction is one of the safest methods to clean the ear. Our specialist ear care team will look at your ear using a microscope. This magnifies the ear, making easier to assess and treat.

A suction device is used to clean the ear without the use of water. The gentle suction device works in a similar way to a vacuum cleaner, and although it can be quite noisy, it is quick and painless. If the object being removed is hard, then removal can be slightly uncomfortable.

When microsuction is being used to remove wax, then the procedure tends to be less uncomfortable if a wax softening spray or drops are used for 4 or 5 nights before, and on the morning of, the appointment. These can be purchased from any pharmacy; they do not need to be prescribed by a doctor.

Who Needs Aural Microsuction?

Most people can have their ears successfully treated in their GP practice. Wax, debris, foreign body or excess skin can be removed by irrigating (spraying with water) the ear.

What to expect at your wax removal appointment?

Your earwax removal appointment will take around 30 mins. Please attend wearing a mask.

After asking a few questions to get a better understanding of your overall health and the health of your ears, our ear care specialist will examine your ear canals and ear drums by using a microscope.

We’ll then talk you through the procedure and show you the equipment that will be used and explain how it works. You’ll need to sign a consent form before we remove any wax from your ears.

Once you are happy to go ahead, our ear care specialist will use a magnifier and suction tube to gently remove any wax that’s in your ear.

After our clinician has performed the procedure, they will then check the health of your ears and record this information.

If we are unsuccessful in removing any wax, we’ll advise you on your next steps.

If we have any concerns, we will inform your GP.

Does aural microsuction treatment hurt?

Ear micro-suction is not a painful procedure; however, the ear canal is very delicate and sensitive and it is important to sit still when asked to do so. The procedure can be stopped at any point if you feel you need a break.

Should I use olive oil drops prior to treatment?

Olive oil drops can help soften the earwax making it easier for earwax removal. However, in most cases the earwax can be removed without prior usage of olive oil drops.

What happens if you can’t remove the earwax?

Our Ear Care Specialists endeavour to remove the earwax in one appointment, however, sometimes we may not be able to if it’s too hard to reach, too close to the eardrum or attached to the skin. If we feel that this is the case, we may advise you to arrange a follow up appointment and use olive oil drops in the interim. The drops should soften the earwax making it easier to remove in the follow up appointment.

Are there any side effects to the procedure?

Ear micro-suction is a very safe and effective method to remove earwax but there may be some temporary changes to your ears immediately after the procedure such as:

  • Your ears feeling “cold” – this is due to the ‘caloric’ effect of the procedure which can give a cooling sensation in the ear.
  • Greater sound sensitivity
  • Dizziness and/or disorientation
  • Your ear throbbing or feeling sore

Many of these side effects do pass within 24 hours as it is just your body adjusting to the earwax not being there, especially if it has been building up for a long period of time.
