What is Stroke and Neurological Rehabilitation?

Stroke and Neurological rehabilitation specialises in the treatment of patients with neurological symptoms following damage to the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves. This may be following diagnosis with a neurological condition (e.g. Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease) or after a neurological injury (e.g. stroke or head injury).

What to expect during an appointment?

At Medineeds our Stroke and Neurological Rehabilitation service provides specialist physiotherapy sessions and were needed medical review with our Neurological Rehabilitation Consultant.

Treatment sessions will focus on optimising, maintaining or improving function in everyday activities and improving quality of movement, through interventions such as the provision of tailored exercise programmes. These may range from a simple stretching regime to enable ease of care tasks such as washing and dressing a limb, to higher level balance, mobility and gym programmes.

For those living with neurological conditions, a bespoke comprehensive rehabilitation programme may help in the maintenance of function and reduce the risk of deterioration, hence reducing the potential need to see your GP.

Patients may be seen either in the privacy of their own homes through domiciliary visits or at our clinic site in the centre of Taunton.

Who might benefit from our services?

Adults and young people over the age of 16 years old with the following;

• Long term neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease e.g. people who have progressive neurological conditions to assist to manage their condition.
• Traumatic or acquired brain injuries such as post-stroke or post tumour rehabilitation.
• Movement and mobility difficulties or falls.
• Problems with their posture, seating, or positioning.
• Requiring an assessment or review of their splints and orthotics.
